North Dakota Travel Tips
Always fill up in Dickinson before heading west. Gas stations thin out drastically. Same rule applies heading north of Minot.
Google Maps and Maps.me work offline. Cell service is extremely limited in TRNP and rural western ND. Download before you leave town.
Temperatures can vary 40Β°F in a single day. Bring layers even in summer. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in June/July.
Stay at least 100 yards from bison. They are wild animals that can charge without warning. Enjoy from your vehicle or a safe distance.
Medora lodging sells out months in advance in July/August. Book the Medora Musical tickets and hotel simultaneously at medora.com.
Wildlife viewing is best at dawn (5β8am) and dusk (6β9pm) in TRNP. Midday heat drives animals to shade β use that time for hiking.
Carry extra water β especially for hiking in TRNP. Grocery stores are sparse in western ND. Stock up in Dickinson or Watford City.
Check dot.nd.gov before any trip. Spring road damage and winter closures are common.
